Yzerfontein is the perfect destination when visiting the West Coast as it is located within a radius of Darling, Langebaan, Saldanha, Game and Nature Reserves.

Yzerfontein is a historic  coastal town with salt pans from where  salt was shipped to Cape Town during the early years of the establishment as the Cape as a settlement area.

Just outside of the town are authentic lime burners which is a unique tourist attraction.

Situated on the Flower Route, Yzerfontein is a convenient stayover during the spring Flower Festival months.  The fields are famous for its vygies and the marshes for arum lilies and a multitude of flora and fauna.


There are various activities and tourist attractions are available. Yzerfontein is a favourite for visitors such as surfers, hikers, whale  and birdwatchers. Whale watching  is a highlight during the warm summer season. The lime cliffs provide a magnificent view to watch these magnificent giant fish of the ocean.
 

For self caterer’s, Yzerfontein has a local supermarket and very good restaurants in and around Yzerfontein and Darling. There are winefarms and and an olive farm to be visited on your way to Darling only 15-20 minutes drive from Yzerfontein.

Just outside of town is the fishmarket where snoek is available as the boats come from the local harbour.

The West Coast Nature Reserve, Buffelsfontein Game Reserve and the Khwattu San Cultural Centre is in a radius of 16 km. .

Most restaurants in Yzerfontein are walking distance from Gegund, but if you feel like taking a drive there are some very exquisite restaurants in and around Yzerfontein, from fine dining to more relaxed light lunches. For the connoisseur, Yzerfontein is surrounded by wine farms and an olive farm. Yzerfontein is only a couple of minutes' drive away from Darling where the famous wild flower festival is being held.

If you are planning to explore the West Coast, then staying in Yzerfontein is perfect, because it is so close to other West Coast towns frequently visited by tourists, such as Langebaan and Saldanha. It is also around the corner from the Buffelsfontein Game Reserve and Khwa ttu San Cultural Centre.

The CLEFT IN THE ROCK SELF CATERING UNIT on ground level is entered through  a private a private patio with BBQ-area,  chairs and table.The patio has full seaview. The bedroom is furnished with twinbeds,  en suite bath, basin and toilet. The kitchenette is equipped with an undercounter fridge and kitchen utensils . White organic bedding and toweling as well as a hairdryer is provided. On request either a kingsize  or two single beds is available.

DOVE’S NEST SELF CATERING UNIT  is entered on ground level through  a private a private patio with BBQ-area,  chairs and table. The patio has full seaview. The bedroom  furnished with twinbeds ,  en suite shower, basin and toilet. The kitchenette is equipped with an undercounter fridge and kitchen utensils . White organic bedding and toweling as well as a hairdryer is provided. On request either a kingsize  or two twin beds can be provided.

Directions: 

Yzerfontein is situated on the west coast of South Africa; it is about 80 km north of Cape Town (as the crow flies), halfway between Cape Town and Langebaan. The nearest town to it is Darling.

Yzerfontein by road

From Cape Town, take the R27 (the West Coast road). Continue along the R27 passing Milnerton, Sunset Beach, Tableview, Melkbos and Grotto Bay. The generous 120km/h speed limit means that you will find yourself at the turnoff to Yzerfontein relativley quickly. Right will take you to Darling along the R315, while left takes you to Yzerfontein. Pass the lime kilns and you get to Yzerfontein - now there are only 3 ways to go:

Yzerfontein by plane

Cape Town International is the nearest major airport. Land there, and then hop into a car. Follow the N2 towards Cape Town, take the M5 turnoff towards Milnerton, turn off the M5 onto the N1 towards Cape Town, then take the R27 turnoff travelling north to Yzerfontein. Follow the directions along the R27 as set out above.
